The BHSFP 2nd XV, having been recently promoted, travelled
to Ballynahinch with probably their youngest representation ever,
including 7 players eligible for under 20's. The match started on time
with the 4 school leavers eager to start the match against one of their
former teachers who propped up the "hinch" front row.
10 minutes passed in the game before scrumhalf Gareth mcKeague picked from
a retreating scrum 35 meters out to sell the sweetest of dummies and throw
off would be tacklers for a superb individual try, he promptly dropped his
own conversion. 0 - 7.
The "hinch" pack then began to show its dominance and the High
School came under extended periods of pressure on their own line. Poetic
cover tackling by Mark Marno and a crucial lineout steal by Andrew
Jackson, making his debut in the pack, only postponed the inevitable and
the home forwards rumbled over after 25 minutes. The conversion put the
score level. 7 - 7.
The visitors replied swiftly when ill discipline from Ballynahinch gave
rise to a penalty. Mckeague reading a chink in the home defence took the
quick tap to offload to debutante Kris Porter who crashed 25 meters to the
end conversion was missed. 7 - 12.
The home forwards once again upped their game and the former pupils were
camped on their line for the next period. However the visitors proved
their heart time and again as the naive home team battered the School line
with 6 consecutive penalties. During which Porter and centre Alan Magee
showed their quality in defence with excellent tackling. Pressure was
finally relieved when centre Kyle Brown and wing David Wright combined to
force the knock on in the in goal area. The half ended with McKeague
attempting a penalty from halfway, to no avail.
Half time 7 - 12
In an attempt to recreate the end of the first half Ballynahinch started
the second by missing a penalty from the halfway line.
The young High School pack showed, if briefly, that they could beat the
old hands of the Ballynahinch pack at their own game and rumbled up the
pitch, the drive culminated in a penalty to the former pupils, which
McKeague duly slotted over. 7 - 15.
The home side rallied and scored their own penalty with 10 minutes gone in
the second half. 10 - 15.
10 more minutes passed before the next score which went to the home side.
A quick penalty caught the High school unawares and the ballnahinch backs,
who had been out played throughout the game so far ran in the try. the
conversion put the home side ahead for the first time in the game. 15 -
17.
5 minutes later there was a short stoppage of play as High School lock
Christopher Pennycook went down with an injury, however Christopher's well
documented "abrasive" nature prevailed and he duly returned to
play the remainder of the match.
With under 10 minutes remaining in the game ballnahinch forced the
visitors to look for the try with a further penalty and 3 points more to
their tally. 20 - 15.
A rare defensive mistake from the former pupils allowed "hinch"
in for another try almost on full time. The conversion was successful.15 -
27. Only injury time remained for the visitors to get the consolation try,
and it almost came, following good linking play by the backs. However a
foot in touch by outhalf Richard Atkinson cruelly put paid to such
aspirations.

Final score 15 - 27
Ballynahinch came off the pitch worthy winners, but the Former Pupils have
shown that they can compete in this new league. A few excellent individual
performances can easily transform into excellent team play with
organisation. On that note ,see you ALL down at training on Tuesday and
Thursday. |
