After having a free
Saturday last week and with the disappointing display against Ballymoney
the previous week consigned to history High School were pleased to welcome
the students of Coleraine University for this league encounter at
Greenisland. Team changes from the previous match saw Andy Ervine come in
for his first game of the season at first XV level . With Paul Shaw out
injured Paul Lavery was promoted following a good display for the seconds
the previous week at Inishowen .

With the weather and
playing conditions both excellent the large watching crowd expected a free
flowing game and were not to be disappointed as High School soon gave a
hint of their intentions with an early David Mayne try after only 4
minutes of play. This try came from set piece possession with the ball
stretched across the backline to David who cleared the Students defence to
get the scoreboard ticking over. The try was converted by Tim Murphy.
With High School exerting
all the early pressure the forward pack soon dominated proceedings with
Peter Taylor, John Balmer and big Andy “Jim” Morrison to the fore in
securing any loose ball available. The other pack members were playing
well as a unit with Stephen Morton in particular showing excellent form
both in attack and defence.

For the next period UUC
maintained a reasonable defence against the High School side but with
sixteen minutes of the match gone David Mayne struck again when a great
break up the wing by Jordan Frampton was stopped short. Good support by
David allowed him to receive the pass from Jordy and go over for the
points. The conversion was missed and with the first quarter of the match
gone High School were in double figures and in full control.
Further tries in this
half were scored by the tireless Greg Elliott from a short scrum and
drive. This was followed by a tremendous break by Tim Murphy who offloaded
to Andy Ervine who gratefully collected the points and with the Students
reeling under the pressure Stephen Morton rattled in two tries before the
break from catch and drive situations.

| The start of the
second half saw no change in the approach by High School and little
prospect for the students of any let up in the onslaught. With seven
minutes of the half elapsed Stephen Morton made it a hat trick ( and a jug
) with another drive over try and not to be outdone David Mayne got his
third ( and another jug ) soon after following a strong run through the
heart of the visitors defence. Tim Murphy converted . |

The situation was looking
pretty grim for the Students who despite being on the wrong end of a
substantial score at this point continued to battle hard up front and
challenged at every opportunity. But with the High school backs giving
vent to their talents there was really no hiding place for the visitors on
this particular day. A further six tries were accumulated through Chris
Kitchen playing strongly in the centre and Neil Hastings who got two in a
row with the second right out of the top drawer
( converted by Jonny Mayne ) . The next was scored by Jordan
Frampton capping a good all round display and the final two were scored by
David Mayne and Stephen Morton respectively both of whom can be well
satisfied after such a good day at the office.
With fourteen tries under
the belt and the score heading in the direction of the “ton” the
referee blew up with 10 minutes of the match remaining.
High School can feel
pleased with this performance but Coach Davy Scott and the players will
know that more difficult challenges lie ahead as the season progresses.
