BHS FP 2ndXV vs. Ballynahinch
5XV
The first league match of the season kicked off on a wet and windy
Saturday afternoon at the High School pitches. The former pupils were
eager to avenge a 15, 27 defeat away to Ballnahinch in last seasons
opening game.
The first score came 10 minutes into the contest when the Ballnahinch
backline read the overlap. Spread the ball to the left and sent the
winger
into the corner for the try. The conversion was successful despite the
conditions. 0 ,7
5 minutes later the Former Pupils hit back with a try of their own. With
the ball bouncing around precariously inside the visitors 22 meter line
during a particularly scrappy period, flanker David Hannah managed to
collect the ball and touch down over the line. The conversion was
unsuccessful. 5 ,7
20 minutes into the game a High School driving maul around the 22m line
put the Hinch defenders on the back foot. Scrumhalf Andrew pixie
McCormick darted out from behind the mass of forwards, using his feet
managed to slip
a tackle and reach the line for the Former Pupils second try of the
match.
The conversion was unsuccessful. 10 ,7
A scrum 5 meters out from the Hinch line lead to the next try, 25minutes
into the half. The visitors superior scrummaging allowed them to steal
the
ball, however a mistake by the back row caused the ball to shoot out and
come to rest over the try line. David Hannah once again showed his
ability
in scavenging and dived onto the ball before anyone else could react.
The conversion was unsuccessful. 15 ,7
With 36 minutes passed in the contest Phil McKeown suffered an injury
that forced him to spend the remainder of the game as a spectator.
Shortly after this Hinch reduced their deficit with a penalty. 15 ,10
The referee blew for half time with a mere 52 minutes on the clock.

The second half was 15
minutes old before the next score came, a dubious build up with numerous
very flat passes presented winger Glenn Sargent with the ball and plenty
to do. He took the ball down the flank and seemed clear to score in the
corner, Glenn however had other ideas and in an extravagant move
sidestepped his opposite man and promptly dotted the ball down between the
sticks. Barry Taylor slotted the conversion. 22 ,10
Just 2 minutes later a deft kick by Hooker Stuart Thompson saw the ball
behind the Hinch defence. An excellent chase by Stuart and Lock Greg Weir
assured that the home team regained possession, from which Greg was able
to run the ball in under the uprights. Barry Taylors conversion was
successful. 29 ,10
Greg weir was able to double his personal tally to 10 in the dying
minutes, with a superb break up the blind side resulting in a try in the
corner. The conversion was unsuccessful. 34 ,10
